If you are planning to visit Manas National Park of Assam for the first time, you will probably confused about your itinerary. Because there is not much information on exploring Manas National Park. However, most people on the internet would mention one area i.e. Mathanguri Picnic Spot. It is a must-visit place if you want to explore the wilderness of Manas National Park. Introduction of Mathanguri Picnic Spot

Mathanguri Picnic Spot is located deep inside Manas National Park just beside the Manas River. The picnic spot is located at such as location along the Assam-Bhutan border that if you cross the river, you will enter the territory of Bhutan. The place is one of the most beautiful picnic spots of Manas National Park; you have the beautiful Manas river carrying water clear and chilled water from the Bhutan Himalayas and the thick forest of Manas and Royal Bhutan National Park.

How To Reach Mathanguri Picnic Spot

Manas National Park is 130 km away from Guwahati city. All major cities of India are connected to Guwahati via railway and flight. Once you reach Guwahati, you can book a taxi to Barpeta Road, Manas National Park. It would cost around Rs. 4500. There are budget travel options i.e. railway. You can book any passenger train from Guwahati to Barpeta Road Railway Station. From the station, you can take a taxi (cost Rs. 1000) to reach Manas National Park.

Ask your cab driver to drop at the main gate of the National Park. If you have booked a cottage/resort near Manas, then you can drop your luggage there and head to Mathanguri afterwards. The entry point to Mathanguri is Manas National Park Main Gate. From this point, Mathanguri is almost 18 Km.

Remember, from the entry point to Mathanguri, it is a forest road. You have to register yourself to proceed further. There are two options here to reach Mathanguri: you can book a jeep authorised by the forest department or you can register your vehicle to enter the forest area.

Where to Picnic in Mathanguri?

It is noted that no picnic is allowed once you enter the core areas of Manas National Park. Mathanguri is no exception. However, there are designated picnic places near the area for picnics.  For a picnic you have to take a left turn from the main gate, the dirt road would take you near the Manas River. There is ample space for picnic parties in that area. Many people from neighbouring areas visit the place during winter times. They cook outdoors and enjoy lunch in the beautiful background of the area. It is a wholesome experience.

However, no picnic is allowed in the safari zone. You can carry your packed lunch if you want. 

Where to Stay near Mathanguri Picnic Spot

If you want to stay inside the Mathanguri area, accommodation is very limited. As it is a forest area, only one govt. approved bungalow is there. It is Manas Heritage Center, earlier known as Mathanguri Lower Bungalow. It is a famous bungalow constructed during the British period. Even Jawaharlal Nehru, the First Prime minister of India, once stayed at this place. You can book this place offline. For booking, you have to visit the forest range office in advance. If you are coming from Barpeta Road, you can visit the Assam Government Tourist Information Center in Barpeta Road for booking.

There are enough good quality resorts and homestays outside the park, you can book any one of them. These resorts, situated amidst lush green tea gardens are one of the best places to stay near Manas National Park.

Things To Do Near Mathanguri

Elephant and Jeep Safari: Take a safari to watch one-horned rhinos, elephants, and deer, and if you’re fortunate, you might even catch a glimpse of a black panther.

Birdwatching: Explore various birdwatching towers to observe the diverse avian species in the area.

Riverside Relaxation: Spend quality time with friends and family by sitting beside the riverside. If you stay in the bungalow, you’ll experience complete isolation from the public, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere of the place.

Temple Visit: Explore the temple nestled within the forest area. It offers a serene environment for quiet contemplation and spiritual connection.

Visit to Tea Garden: The place surrounding Mathanguri is home to much large tea estate. You can book your stay inside these tea gardens for a new experience.

Best Time To Visit Mathanguri Picnic Spot

The best time to visit Mathanguri is from November to February. But it is a season picnic spot. Avoid visiting in peak Monsoon months (July-August) due to heavy rainfall in the area. However, if you love rain you would love to be here. The thing is that you cannot explore outside during this phase.
