About Dima Hasao District of Assam

“Dima Hasao” means “Dimasa Hills” in the Dimasa language. Dima Hasao is the second largest district of Assam. It is also the least populous district of Assam. The district measuring 4,888 square kilometres is situated midway between Brahmaputra Valley (in the north) and Barak Valley (in the south). Its geographical feature is identical to the Jaintia range of Meghalaya. According to the 2011 census, Dima Hasao had a population of 214,102. Panimur waterfall is 122 km from Haflong (District Headquarter of Dima Hasao) and 32.7 km from Umrangso (another town in Dima Hasao) and is mainly a great attraction for tourists. This offbeat tourist destination is called the Niagara of Assam and the resemblance cannot be overlooked. Famed for its gushing milky white waterfall, Panimur unravels the breathtaking beauty and magnificent of Kopili river flowing through rock-strewn terrains of North Cachar Hills, where it becomes its wildest best. Though the riverfront is bereft of any modern amenities, you can enjoy this scenic place in a rustic way. People can enjoy picnic, riverboat ride, rafting etc. The location is treated by Dimasa tribe of Karbi Anglong as pilgrimage site.

Jatinga is perhaps the most famous, or infamous, location in Dima Hasao due to the strange phenomenon of alleged bird suicides. Haflong to Jatinga is 12 min (5.4 km) road journey via NH 627. The village Jatinga is known for mysterious ‘suicide of birds’, between the months of September and October. Large number of tourists vist that time of the year to witness the phenomenon. This peculiar event occurs at the conclusion of the monsoon season, typically in September and October, during moonless, foggy, and dark nights between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Birds in flight suddenly plummet to the ground without warning, and this phenomenon affects various bird species.

Seilkal peak is situated in the Barail range of Dima Hasao District of Assam. Seilkal peak, which is 2,150 meters (7,050 feet) above sea level is the highest peak in Assam. Additionally, Umrangso boasts an 18-hole natural golf course and serves as a temporary roosting site for Amur Falcons during their migration from Siberia to South Africa, a phenomenon occurring in the months of October and November. Bendao is renowned for its unspoiled allure and exceptionally clear waters. About 13 kms from Haflong, there is a village named Samparidisa. Bendao Baglai Waterfalls is located around 3 kms from this village. This area is home to three magnificent waterfalls nestled amid the lush green forests of Dima Hasao. In Dimasa language, ‘Bendao’ means two sisters and ‘Baglai’ means to jump. As per popular belief, two sisters took their own lives by jumping from one of these three waterfalls. It is believed that the waterfalls got the name from this incident.

Haflong Viewpoint / Abraham Viewpoint

This majestic stone house situated at Maibong town is an ancient remnant of Dimasa Kachari Kingdom. It is located on the Mahur River’s bank in a steep location. Maibang is also one of Dima Hasao District’s three subdivisions and it is 42.3 km from Haflong town.

Khobak Village

Khobak, a Biate village, located approximately 130 km from Haflong, in Dima Hasao district. Khobak has its name for being the coldest place in Assam. So, the best time to visit the village is from December to February.

Best Time to Visit Dima Hasao

During February to April, the weather is generally mild and pleasant, offering visitors an ideal climate for outdoor activities and sightseeing. However, April is the best month if you are nature lover and love outdoor activities. You can easily go trekking and off-roading, as water level of rivulets is minimal. Once the monsoon season arrives, you can not trek and explore much.

Alternatively, the months from August to November present another window of opportunity to discover the destination at its best. During the months of October and November, there is less rainfall. Various festivals are organised during these months.

How To Reach Dima Hasao?

Dima Hasao is well-connected to the Guwahati – state capital of Assam. The headquarter of Dima Hasao district, Haflong is located southeast of Guwahati approximately 330 km away and can be reached through various modes of transport.

By Train: Haflong is the main railway station of Dima Hasao. Haflong is well connected by train from Guwahati and Silchar. It takes approx 6 hour 30 minutes from Guwahati to Haflong by train. There are at least 6 trains from Guwahati to Haflong both in morning and afternoon hours.

By Air: LGBIA (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport) in Guwahati is the nearest airport of Dima Hasao. You can take a taxi service from airport to Haflong or use public transport like buses and trains.

By Road: The roads of Dima Hasao are well-connected to main cities like Guwahati, Silchar and Lanka. There are several buses, both private and state run which offer transportation services from the main cities of Assam to Dima Hasao. For bus services from the state capital Guwahati to Haflong, one can travel by overnight buses that depart from Guwahati at 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm everyday. To travel back to Guwahati, one can travel by buses that depart from Haflong at 6:00 pm and 6:30 pm everyday.
