India’s North East is witnessing a sharp surge in domestic tourism, emerging as one of the most sought-after travel regions in the country during the October–December period. With year-end holidays approaching, destinations across the region are recording heightened interest from travelers seeking cool climates, scenic landscapes and culturally immersive experiences.
According to recent travel trends, popular hill destinations such as Darjeeling, Gangtok and Shillong continue to dominate tourist preferences, while gateway cities like Guwahati and Siliguri are strengthening their role as key entry points to the North East. At the same time, quieter and lesser-known locations including Cherrapunji, Pelling and Kalimpong are gaining traction among travelers looking for serenity and nature-driven travel.
Darjeeling in West Bengal has emerged as the most searched destination in Northeast India during the period surveyed. Renowned for its mist-covered hills, sprawling tea gardens and sweeping Himalayan views, the hill town continues to attract tourists in search of pleasant weather and a slower pace of life.
Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, ranked second, drawing visitors with its unique blend of urban amenities and hill charm. Buddhist monasteries, vibrant local markets and panoramic views of snow-clad peaks, along with nearby attractions such as Tsomgo (Samgo) Lake and Nathula Pass, remain major highlights.
Shillong, Meghalaya’s capital and popularly known as the ‘Scotland of the East’, secured the third position. The city’s rugged terrain, pine forests, scenic lakes and strong musical heritage have resonated with travelers seeking a relaxed yet lively mountain destination. Its mix of colonial-era architecture and indigenous Khasi culture has further added to its appeal.
Guwahati in Assam and Siliguri in West Bengal ranked fourth and fifth respectively, underlining their importance as major transit and tourism hubs for the region.
The survey also points to a notable shift in travel behaviour, with Indian tourists increasingly exploring smaller towns and offbeat destinations across the North East. Places such as Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, Peling in Sikkim and Kalimpong in West Bengal are witnessing growing interest, indicating a move away from destination-centric travel towards broader regional exploration.
Improved connectivity, greater visibility through digital travel platforms and a rising preference for nature-centric and culturally rich experiences have played a key role in driving this trend.
Commenting on the development, Gaurav Malik, Country Director for the Indian Subcontinent and Indian Ocean Islands at Agoda, said, “I am delighted to see tourists embracing the diverse scenery of India, especially the North East. The natural beauty and tranquil environment of the region fascinate those seeking both popular and exotic experiences. In recent years, many establishments—including hotels, hostels, villas, serviced apartments and homestays—have collaborated with Agoda to attract domestic travellers.”
With demand steadily rising, the North East is fast cementing its position as one of India’s most dynamic and in-demand tourism regions.
